Hello and welcome to the May edition of the ASE monthly E-News. In this months edition there is news about the upcoming free AFTRS master-class with Nick Myers, on his editing of “Balibo” and also news of a free screening of the Oscar nominated short film "Miracle Fish" which will be followed by a discussion with writer, director and editor Luke Doolan. Members should also remember that the very popular Mentorship Scheme has been brought back so if you're interested please check details in the "Members Benefits" section of this edition.

ASE COMMITTEE:
In a very exciting development for the Guild's connections to the international community of editors, Vice President Melanie Annan has set up
an interchange with the widely read and hugely informative editing site Art of the Guillotine (http://www.artoftheguillotine.com). Excerpted
clips from ASE events will soon be posted on the Art of the Guillotine, side by side with similar posts from the American, British and Canadian
editors Guilds posts.
Also, on behalf of the whole membership, the Exec Committee made a submission this month to the Federal Government in response to its Review of the Screen Production Industry. A huge thank you to all members who replied to our quick survey on conditions, we used this data to support our statements about issues of concern to the post-production sector of industry, and also thank you to those who sent comments. Your comments have been included in the body of the ASE submission. Our submission will be posted online by the Government, along with submissions from other Guilds and production companies insuring that our membership has a voice in the ongoing discussions with government about industry sustainability.
In other exciting news for our members the events sub-committee (Deb Peart, Karen Fleming and Kat Barker) are putting together an “Underbelly” event in Melbourne during May, due to success of the similar event held in Sydney last month, so please watch this space for more information. They have also planned a very exciting event for Sydney in May with Luke Doolan, editor of Miracle Fish (please check details below).

NEWS:
“MIRACLE FISH” SCREENING & DISCUSSION
The Australian Screen Editors Guild (ASE) would like to invite you to a screening of the Oscar nominated Miracle Fish and a discussion with Director, Writer and Editor Luke Doolan.
Miracle Fish is a gripping, visually powerful and masterfully crafted short film, which sees 8 yr old Joe having a birthday he’ll never forget. After friends tease him, he sneaks off to the sick bay, wishing everyone in the world would go away. He wakes up to find his dream may have become a reality.
The film has received critical acclaim around the world and been seen at festivals including Sundance 09, Sydney International Film Festival 09 (where it won the Dendy Award for Best Live Action Short) and Munich Short Film Festival 09. It has also been named Winner Best Short Fiction Film and Best Screenplay in Short Film at the Australian Film Institute Awards 2009.
Luke has been gaining a reputation as an accomplished editor over the years. This is his first foray into directing and we will be exploring how his history in the cutting room has informed his approach.

MASTERCLASS WITH NICK MYERS ASE
The Editing Department at AFTRS is organising a master-class for their Grad Dip and Grad Cert Editing students with Nick Meyers ASE, which will include a screening and discussion of his award winning editing of “Balibo” on Saturday 22nd May. Nick will discuss the way the film took shape, showing examples of early edits.

EDITING ON THE WEB:

The revolutionary editor Dede Allen, ACE (86) passed away on Saturday April 17th after a stroke. Born in 1923 and still editing in 2008 Dede cut many landmark films including the ground breaking Bonnie and Clyde and The Hustler. She was nominated for Academy Awards for Dog Day Afternoon, Reds and Wonder Boys. The ASE extends it wishes to Dede's family and friends. Click the link below for the LA Times Obituary.
