| A Glimpse into the Avatar Post Production Process

\"\"

With Avatar becoming the highest grossing film in the world we thought we\'d share some links about the post-production process:

Avatar Introduces a New Era in Filmmaking by Daniel Restuccio in POST MAGAZINE

“Jim was originally going to edit the whole thing himself,” recalls editor John Refoua, “but after a little while he realised that with all the work and directing it was going to be too much. He called me to come in for six weeks and that was two and a half years ago."

Editing on Another Planet: John Refoua and Stephen Rivkin by Michael Kunkes in
EDITORS GUILD MAGAZINE

"The focus from all of us was: How do we do this movie in a way that makes sense?  What is the best way to do things?  There were no set procedures, so we were discovering things as we went along."

Dream Capturers: James Cameron’s Brave New World of Filmmaking
by Michael Kunkes in EDITORS GUILD MAGAZINE

“Because we’re not playing by the rules, and because you have those infinite possibilities, there’s always the risk of getting bogged down ... you find yourself asking, ‘Why?’ a whole lot more than you normally might.  ‘Why am I on this angle?  Why am I on a close-up on this actor when a wide shot might work better?’  In a way, it puts you back to basics as an editor, because you have to be even more rigorous and disciplined about the narrative drive of each moment.”

Otherworldly Workflow by Michael Kunkes in EDITORS GUILD MAGAZINE

"If you think that unwrapping the mysteries of transcoding file-based camera footage provides its challenges, you will find the post-production workflow on Avatar either very scary, or a completely visionary model of things to come."

Assisting in the Digital Age: Avatar’s Jason Gaudio by Michael Kunkes in EDITORS GUILD MAGAZINE

"Teamwork is what got us through this three-year project, and I’m very proud to have been a part of it."

| Flickerfest Announces Winners

For those who were able to attend a session I am sure you would agree catching some of Australia\'s and the world\'s latest and greatest shorts is a lovely way to spend an afternoon/night. Especially if you get a chance to relax on the Balcony - one of the best vistas of any film festival.

The ASE would like to congratulates its members who picked up awards:

The Avid Award for Best Editing in An Australian Short Film went to Mark Burnett for GPS. GPS, tells the story of Thompson, a seven-year-old runt with a gift for direction, who has one dream in life - to be the voice of a GPS navigator. It was a real hit with the audience.
