Well, I visited a long time ago and registered. I keep getting these emails saying a forum I subscribe to 'Editsearch' has been updated, but if I try to go and read it Im told I don't have permission to view them.

I can't remember now why I was subscribed to a forum I don't have permission to view - something about having to upgrade or pay or something I think, but when you read a thread like this, and see how quiet the public areas are, why would I bother?

Editsearch

Hi Lumeswell,

Yes, you are right - Editsearch is only available to full members of the ASE. The jobs details are all displayed on the Editsearch forum that only members can see.

It's one of the many benefits of being a full member. So I encourage you to join.

Although the forums go through quiet times now and then we are a very active guild and hold regular events.

Please read more about membership benefits here:

All the best,

Mel

Sad.

It's sad to see this.

Despite your valiant efforts, Mel, it seems most people are more interested in whinging about how bad the situation is rather than trying to stay positive and actually do something about it.

It's actually the point I usually bail from social sites, forums or blogs, when the infighting and complaining starts.

I reiterate that there is much useful info here, even if it isn't the most curent thing in the world. Perhaps it could be addressed by another revision of the website to something more 'social' which allows video / file uploads, sharing of media, basically create an environment in which members can engage in more up-to-date way? Plenty of solutions out there for something like this.

Maybe we should be giving people a reason for coming back to the site? A Podcast? Some regular articles? A blog? Not just announcements for events? These are all things that are relatively cheap (sometimes free) to produce, and it would all add value to the ASE website, and give people something to talk about on the forums, with any luck kickstarting some activity.

When I ask non-member editors why they haven't joined the ASE, invariably the answer is simply that they don't see the value in it. An up-to-date web resource might be a good way to address this? The ASE Awards have been a good thin in this regard, also.

We have world-class editors in Australia, shouldn't we have an online presence that reflects this?

As per usual, simply my two cents, and I'm sure there will be hose out there who will want to tear me apart. More power to them, if there's anybody left to read it.

Thank you Enzo. Good feedback, and I might have guessed that it'd come from you.

I'm disappointed with how little relevance newer editors see in the ASE. Having chaired the Victorian committee in the past, I know that it's not easy to maintain relevance, but people do need a reason to belong.

Like you, I don't think that Editsearch is enough.

JWRL,

Actually, it's not only newer editors that feel that way. I know career editors that have been doing a great job for over 20 years that can't see the ASE's relevance to them as they work in lifestyle TV. Sad.

Daz - I'll be over in a jiffy!

ASE is for all Editors

Hi Enzo,
The ASE is for all screen editors. Music Videos, News and Current Affairs, Doco, Features, Commercials, Short Films, Online content and all Television including Lifestyle of course. We aim to promote, improve and protect the role of editor as an essential and significant contributor to screen productions. Our awards celebrate excellence in editing and the TV Non-Drama category is open to Lifestyle and Reality Television. To have a strong guild we need editors to come together from all different disciplines - and we embrace them all.
