View Full Version : Perth Meet - required reading?
Hi all
It's that time again in Perth. Time for beer and skittles and letting off steam.. or perhaps at this time of year time for wood fires and red wine and letting off steam.
We were thinking of perhaps having a meeting focus this time - something like nominating a movie for all of us to see when we can and using this as a discussion point for the upcoming meet.
I am going to see Rock School next weekend at the Luna, and that might be cool, since its (according to the blurb) an award winning doco, but I'm open to any ideas anyone has - favorite movies that they would love to dissect, for eg?
Anyway. Anyone?
What dates are people free?
cheers
Jude

Any week night except Tuesday and no weekends...hehehe...
I can't wait to meet up with all of you cos I miss the last meeting. It has been too long....
About a film to watch, I think let's watch something from this coming Revelation Film Fest. I think that it should be awesome. Or maybe we should explore more on the topic of " What the difference between editing a short film and a feature film?"
I'm all for going to the Revelation Fest. Michelle suggested the same thing. Besides, I just looked at the blurb for Rock School again and its not an award winner - so the festival would probably be cooler.
Do you want to go as a a group and hang out afterwards as the meet this time? It's probably better while the film is still fresh in our minds. What's on that good?
I can do any weeknight except Monday or Thursday. So that leaves ... Wednesday or Friday night at this stage? I'm also going away after July 20 for a few weeks.
We need a secretary :P
Matt - are you out there? Bruce? Anyone else?

Sounds good, no wednesdays or sundays for me, nights that is, pretty much any other day or night is cool unless something pops up.
I've seen a LOT of films lately but i always find it hard to focus on analysing something, especially the editing, on first screening, or maybe i do it deliberately if its a good film and i just get engaged and lost in the story.
However it probably would be good to have a few "pre-planned" discussion topics.
Right. This makes it easier.

sun 10/7 - A day off so anything
-
and that seems to be it.
gee whiz, its tough for us all to meet, of course we could do the orginal idea and choose a film then catch up and discuss it. but i like the idea of us going as a gang.
have a great w/e everyone.
mish
I reckon Tarnation on Sat 2/7 at 7.00pm would be cool. It looks like it would have been the most difficult project of the lot to edit, given that it is footage taken from the guys whole life. How would you make a (good) story out of your own home movies?
Is this OK with everyone?

Yup.. that is good.. I will be there..
See all of you there.
Hey Mish and Matt
We looked everywhere for you - did you come? I rang your mobile, Mish, but it was off. Hope you are both OK.
David missed seeing you with a bell on, too :P
Very interesting film. It looked like an editors nightmare - the amount of work and thought that must have gone into it was incredible. And then David pointed out that it was cut on iMovie! Bloody amazing.

unfortunately couldn't make it due to last minute work, hope you all enjoyed it, i will hopefully make the next meet but as i'm sure you all know work always seems to pop up when you don't want it and when you do you can't get any.
Did it seem like it was cut on imovie, i'm sure it had some "help " after being picked up, kinda like robert rodriguez and his $7000 film that had $500 000 spent on it after it was picked up for distribution.
It didn't look like it was cut on iMovie, and we theorised that it had had a lot of 'help' (probably in the form of cutting masses of stuff out) from a second editor.
It was pretty self indulgent, but that was kind of the soul of it anyway.
It was still very interesting to see how he took all this crap footage, phone messages, taped conversations of him and his mother, washed out photos and some text and - without vo narration - made a watchable and understandable 88 minute film.
Although - we had an interesting conversation about context - and how Richard Sowada said it was an amazing film, so we all watched it avidly, but if one of our mates sat us down in front of it as his iMovie project - would our opinion have been different?
Anyway, hope we can catch up at the next meet, Matt :)
