Hi all

I will be editing my 1st TVC probably some time this week [have just been told].

What are the technical requirements for Editing / Supplying an edited TVC to the Networks [in general].

IE SETUP: is it 1 min Bars / Tone -12dB {Peak Meter} -> 10 sec system black -> 10 sec Clapper / ID with Key Number -> 10 sec Count -> Program starts at 00:01:30:00.

IE what info should you include on the Clapper / ID.

IE I was once told that your audio's average loudness should be between -15 and -12 dB with momentary peaks pushed up to -9dB for TVCs if you can get away with it [statiion-wise]. Is this true? Suggestions? [-12 dB / -9 dB Peak / Digital Audio = 0 dB / + 3dB VU / Analogue Audio]

IE I am aware the audio needs to cut out before the end of the Vision, how many frames is this? And does it also do this at the head of the clip [I don't think so but I need to check]? Does a 15 sec TVC run for exactly 15 x 25 frames?

IE Is there anything additional from the norm [in particular] that I should know about / be aware of regarding luma and chromo levels?

Anything else??

I don't know any of these conventions with a clear certainty at present, hence why I am asking here.

I regularly see crappy quality TVCs on the tube [esp Regional NBN / Prime Gold Coast & even late night Metros], I do not want to add to this phenomenon.... I would like to know the correct way to go about this so that I can be sure that I have done it right.

Thank you very much for you time in advance, gals and guys.

[I really need to know of these things sooner than later if that is acceptable]

For all commercials regardless of length, there must be 12 frames of silence from picture start and 12 frames of silence before picture end. For example a 30 sec TVC should have 29 seconds of audio.

The Free TV Australia Limited website has a code of practice (http://www.ctva.com.au/documents/Code_of_Practice_July_2004.pdf) which states in part:

"1.11 Commercials must not be excessively noisy or strident.

1.12 Licensees must do everything reasonably possible to ensure that commercials
sound louder than adjacent programming.

1.13 Studio transmission must not be increased from normal levels during

1.14 A licensee shall be deemed to have complied with Clauses 1.11 and
ensures that the relevant requirements of Free TV Australia’s Operational
on Loudness of Advertisements, as amended from time to time, have
requirement is satisfied if a person submitting a commercial certifies to
all requirements of the Operational Practice Note on Loudness of
concerning compression, limiting and equalisation have been met."

If you hunt around you may find a relevant "operational practice" such as the ones FACTS used to put out.

I found this:

http://ninemsn.com.au/blipimages/tv/digital/Documents/OP36_HDTV_SDTV_Guidelines.pdf

I think its current. If you follow it you'll be fine I'm sure.
