I have worked in long form offline/online projects that mainly end up on ABC/SBS. I am now editing a couple of TVC's and wanted to know about delivery items for such. My questions are:
1) Timecode start - Length bars - black + countdown.
2) Audio and picture - blank audio at top/tail (no. of frames)
It's for 2x30 sec TVs for Sydney stations. Large company client.
Please make it as detailed as possible for future reference for others as well.
cheers Nick

Hi Nick,

I used to do that stuff all the time (although not for a few years now) but in my day it always used to be:

00:00:00:00 - 00:01:00:00 - colour bars
00:01:00:00 - 00:01:15:00 - Ident Board
00:01:20:00 - 00:01:30:00 - count down
00:01:30:00 - picture start
00:01:30:12 - audio start (I but don't think they're so strict about this these days...)

If you are compiling both TVCs on the same tape then the second one would have a pic start of 00:03:30:00, a third one @ 00:05:30:00, etc.

Hope that helps, cheers,
Philippa

the only thing about the audio used to be related to tape-based systems, especially when there was some concern about switching and accuracy down to the frame in an on air pres environment. So for the sake of not having rough bumps in on-air presentation, the standard of 10-12 frames front and aft of no sound was born. (That way even if you cut into an ad a few frames late there's no disturbing cuts in audio.)I still adhere to this, even though servers would probably make this standard mildly obsolete. But you still have to rely on tape handling staff to be accurate on the ingest, and as most of those kiddies are, well, kiddies, I am sticking to my old ways for now.

although it would probably be a nice contrast now and again to break those rules a bit. I wonder if anybody'd notice those 10 frames???

As for t/c start and all that, there seems to have been a great divergence in standards, or perhaps a dropping of them? I find that so long as you provide a cue sheet, and give a good 40 secs to a minute of bars and a bit of black at the head of the tape, everybody's happy.

Another thing to keep in mind is that certain broadcasters have specifications on what they like to receive - and these differ from station to station, so it may be prudent to get the skinny on this, if you are in direct communication with the receiving station or channel.
