Okay, does anyone know what anime is? Japanese animation? Good, now we can get somewhere. AMVs are music videos made by anime fans using footage from anime series and movies set to popular music. It's purely a fan-based/hobby thing and I do it myself- in fact, that's how I became interested in editing. It exists in a legal grey area- obviously it's blatantly illegal, but the companies who own the material copyrights (the anime companies at least, we don't know what the music companies think) don't just tolerate their existence, they actually encourage them (at the Animania convention last year, Madman -the biggest anime distributor in Australia- provided the first prize for the AMV competition).

AMVs are a lot of fun and some of the people who make them display jaw-dropping levels of editing skill, especially with Aftereffects. The basic internet archive is at www.animemusicvideos.org , although you have to be a member for 2 weeks before you can download, which is a bit of a bugger. I'm on there, under the same name, as part of the production group 'Dizzy Samurai Studios'. We aren't the best, most prolific or most well known group, but we're still learning and we've improved now that I've decided to make editing a career rather than a hobby.

If you do take at look at Amvorgs, make sure you check out Fluxmeister's "Souls of Rage and Sorrow" and Koopiskeva's "Euphoria", as well as some of our stuff- preferably "Chosen Children, Cursed Salvation" and "The Face Inside of Me Is... (Razor Sharp mix)".
